We recently visited 12 PlayPump installations to carry out inspections and where necessary do maintenance.
The PlayPump at Manxeba Village was installed in the Eastern Cape in 2009. When our team arrived they found these two ladies using the PlayPump water to wash their blankets and also have a quick drink.
It isn’t a large community, but they are very reliant on their PlayPump for their water supply as their only other source is an unreliable community tap, which often gets cut off.
The children at Endulwini Village have a PlayPump close to their
school and after school and during the weekend they are always there as there is nothing else to play on in the village. This PlayPump is 9 years old. Ms Noluthando, a community member said that people living close by benefit from the PlayPump as there is no other source of reliable water nearby, so they are very grateful to have it working well, otherwise they would really suffer.
We have +- 900 PlayPumps in South Africa, providing these communities and schools with much needed water. They are all in rural areas and with the current drought, if it were not for their PlayPumps they would all be struggling. Maintenance every 18 months to 2 years ensures these PlayPump continue to work. This we can only do with donations to help keep them maintained.
